摘要

Ghana was among the first countries in Africa connected to the Internet and to introduce ADSL broadband services. The sector is highly competitive with more than 140 licensed ISPs, of which, however, only around 30 are operational. Internet penetration is still very low at around 3%, mainly due to the poor condition of the national fixed-line network and the high cost of connectivity. The emergence of wireless broadband technologies is now speeding up developments, and the planned arrival of alternative international fibre links in 2009 has begun to put pressure on the current monopolistic pricing of international bandwidth. Other key developments that will drive the market going forward are the recent re-privatisation of the national carrier Ghana Telecom, as well as the expected full liberalisation of VoIP telephony and allocation of WiMAX spectrum.
